20th May 2005
Nearly two years since anything happened here. The most recent install images are at http://intimate.handhelds.org/h3800. In spite of the lack of updates, the installer still seems to be working reasonably well. The debian image is correctly installed, but for some reason, blackbox (the window manager) and xstroke (stroke recognition) are not going on - This renders X unusable immediately after install - Log in using a serial consol and perform "apt-get update ; apt-get upgrade ; apt-get install blackbox-ipaq xstroke rxvt" to get some X support on there and then reboot..

Wow.. a second news update in only two days. We got h3800 support working properly now. A new 2.4.19-rmk6-pxa1-hh13 kernel has been built. The initrd's been given a refresh and now loads the new modules needed for the h3800 touchscreen, and correctly handles X rotation and resolution thanks to the Xserver script and Xipaq binary which we stole directly from Familiar. (Thanks guys). The load order for modules has been jiggled in order to make pcmcia support more reliable for a greater variety of sleeves, and the pcmcia config has been refreshed to add support for the wvlan_cs driver which far outperforms the orinoco driver in terms of speed and reliability. The current known-working-good install images are at http://intimate.handhelds.org/install and the newly tweaked install docs can be found here (PDF version, Docbook SGML source)

This project is not dead. We all just hate updating HTML pages. The latest effort is to get h3800 support working properly. There's currently a problem with the pointer not working under X. We've build a new kernel and a new initrd with 2.4.19-rmki6-pxa1-hh13 kenel sources. You can find these files in http://intimate.handhelds.org/h3800. The window manager on the initrd is currently broken. We'll fix that soon hopefully. You can find the current task list at http://handhelds.org/x/wiki/IntimateTaskList

The new install process has just been updated and the howto (PDF version, Docbook SGML source) reworked to match it. Most of the installation is now performed by a script, so Intimate should be much easier to install. This is still very early days for the script though, so please test it and report any bugs to the mailing list. (UPDATE: The X server package is slightly incorrect at the moment, it will try to launch blackbox as a window manager, but we use matchbox now. You will need to edit /etc/init.d/x to reflect this. A new package will appear soon)

Thanks to Paul
Hedderly (prh), the Intimate packages feed now has updated versions
of matchbox and xkbd (a window manager and on-screen keyboard, respectively).
It is quite likely that blackbox and it's associated programs/libraries/applets
will be removed from the feed soon as matchbox is to be the new 'default' window
manager for Intimate.

A development that
has been rumbling for a while among some Intimate people is a new
install method that will make the process much easier. However,
at this point in time, this new method is still quite difficult
and you should only really attempt it if you are a seasoned Linux
user. HTML version is available
here (also available as PDF
or original DocBook SGML).
If you would like to help expand and improve this document or
the install process in general, please contact us!

Finally updated the
installer to be totally compatible with familiar 0.5 (I hope). It
required a new intimateboot package version 0.51 (which has a much
improved linuxrc.intimate thanks to prh), a couple of changes to
the installer to use the right intimateboot package and reiserfs
module, and a few changes to the base image to be compatible with
new device nodes and IDs with the 2.4.7 kernel instead of the old
2.4.3 one.

Jacques has made a new toolchain
and a tarball of the last known compiling xfree source for Xipaq/Xfbdev.
Both can be found in http://intimate.handhelds.org/jacques/
The new toolchain does not "internal compiler error" on parts of the xfree source as all previous versions did.

Disconnect has made
a set of modifications to the installer script to allow installation
to an NFS target instead of microdrive. You can try the new installer
script by using the normal install line, but replace beta-installer
with beta-dis-installer. This will install the normal intimate base
image, based on unstable.
Additionally, Jacques
has produced a new base image around based on the Debian 'testing'
feed instead of the unstable feed. Hopefully this will reduce the
number of problems caused by the Debian arm unstable feed being
in a permanent state of flux... The base image that gets installed
has been modified for compatibility with 2.4.7 kernels. The installer
script has not, and neither has the intimateboot package, so you'll
have to be ever so slightly cunning (install reiserfs module by
hand, don't install the intimateboot package, and grab the linuxrc.intiamte
from the mailing lists.) To install the 'testing' based image, use
the normal installer line, but replace beta-installer with beta-devel-installer.
Things are still
very much in development, and not even close to optimal yet, but
working very nicely towards fam0.5 and 2.4.7 compatibility. (i.e.
it all works if you know which files to tweak, but it's not all
packaged up yet.)
6th October 2001
The whip has been cracked, and work has begun on getting intimate
working correctly with familiar 0.5, and the latest 2.4.7 series
kernels, and a version of the base image based on the 'testing'
debian feed. Hopefully this will bring a little more stability to
things, whilst retaining good compatibility.

New intimateboot package, with automated setting of linuxargs. Install
process modified to use new intimateboot package. New xkbd package
added to the repositary.
27th June 2001
The site just got a bit of an overhaul.. Fixed the broken menus,
and added a packages section.
25th June 2001
The latest greatest version _a1 (not-alpha one) is now officially
released. Check the release notice
for more details
17th June 2001
Time for a little more news then.... Once again, there's been a
hell of a lot going on since the news page got updated. Let me see..
where to begin. The new release is so close to ready it's untrue...
As such, we've officially gone into pre-beta trial release with
the new images. Please try out the beta release. The install instructions
are here on the site.. The old images are no longer supported...
as of now. We simply don't have the resources to keep a copy installed
anywhere for helpdesk style support. Sorry, you'll just have to
start using the new stuff. (It's loads better anyhow :) Well.. what
exciting things can we tell you aobut the new release to make you
all excited... Hmm.. well.. KDE works.. all of it.. check the screenshots..
In fact, it seems that everything we try to apt-get seems to work.
It's really fantastic, we can't tell you how pleased with this new
release we are now :). So.. Please, please, please, update now.
There's gonna be practically no difference between today's beta,
and the final release in a couple of days time. (If there is any
difference, then you can just 'apt-get upgrade' to bring yourself
up to date :) Try it now.. You could be hit by a bus tommorow :)

The new installer is live on the site now. It'll install a modified
version of the 180301 images, which have been updated with the relevant
modules to go with the 2.4.3-rmk2-np1 kernel. In a couple of days
time, this will install the new base images isntead. There's still
a couple of minor bugs/features to clean up in the installer, but
it's 100% fully functional now :) Give it a try.
28th May 2001
The new installer is pretty much finished, and
the new base images are heavily under development. Hopefully there's
gonna be a new release version within the next couple of days. There's
been a hell of a lot of work been going on lately.. none of it visibly
yet.. Just hang tight for a couple of days more... Then all will
be revealed.
3rd May 2001
The boot procedure has been given an overhaul,
and NFSroot is now supported. The required4boot.tgz
and installtools.tgz archives are gone,
replace with .ipk packages to work with the latest familiar-0.4.
The base image needs updating with appropriate lib/modules to match
the kernel version on the latest familiar-0.4...
18th March 2001
The base configuration for intimate has changed
from 64Mb CF to 340MB udrive. 64Mb is just too small to hold a whole
linux system, so now the base is a lot bigger and a lot more feature
rich.
There's some brand new images just out. Check out
the screenshots gallery. These images
are a collection of the following components:
- A debian_stable 2.2 base image
- Additional applications from debian stable such as gcc and Emacs
- An almost complete copy of Alexander S. Guy's Familiar
0.03 images which provide the X server, agenda apps, Python, Chequers,
Patience and others.
- A collection of applications which have been rcompiled and je-rigged
to work on the iPAQ. Some of these were provided via binary archives
from the authors on HandheldsApps.
Chances are that if there's was a binary version there, I included
it. A couple of things I compiled myself.
- Some configuration work and organising done by me.
The feature list reads something like....
All the latest bits:
- Agenda Apps
- wmmp3, wmrecord, wmapm, wmmixer, gqmpeg
- Dillo, ViewML, Konqueror, sfm, xchat
- Doom, Tetris, Chequers, Patience, xmame, xgb, snes
- Full compiliation tools: gcc, gtk libs, glib, etc... Everything
for making kernels and apps too.
- apt packaging, dpkg, dselect and all that stuff for changing
package setup
